'Analysis and Engagement on Central Southern England's Strategic Challenges'

The Southern Policy Centre is the new think tank and policy forum for central southern England. Our focus stretches broadly from Dorset to West Sussex, and the Isle of Wight to Oxfordshire.
The region has had little public policy focus despite facing challenges distinct from both the metropolis and other English regions.
Our public spending per head is low though we face the triple costs of deprived urban areas, rurality and an ageing population.
Average incomes are above the national average but this can mask sharp inequalities and high living costs. Our population is growing with significant migration from other parts of the UK and abroad, but there is a real conflict between the need for housing and the sensitivity of the natural environment.
Economic development, though generally good, is uneven and constrained by shortages of skills, infrastructure and finance.
The Southern Policy Centre will analyse the data, work with stakeholders and shape policy proposals. We will be a focal point for the discussion of current issues.
The Southern Policy Centre will be at the forefront of Open Data initiatives in this region, working between public service organisations and potential users to develop new ways of using data.
The Southern Policy Centre will promote innovative methods of public engagement and empowerment such as deliberative polling and web-based dialogue and consultation to enhance public policy making.
The Southern Policy Centre has a broad based advisory committee including members of all the major Westminster parties, as well as business, local authority, public service, university and voluntary sector partners. We will be seeking charitable status.
